AC Repair – How to Troubleshoot Common AC Problems

Air conditioning does more than keep us cool; it also purifies our air quality, killing germs and pests. But if your system is not performing as it should, you’ll need to call in a professional to make AC repairs. Before you do, however, consider taking a few hours to troubleshoot the problem yourself, as many common issues can be resolved without costly service calls.

In most cases, the first thing to do if your AC Repair conditioner isn’t working is check for a power outage or a blown fuse. You should also be able to tell if your system is leaking refrigerant, which is a clear sign that it’s time to replace the compressor. You can also determine if your ductwork is leaking, which can cause your system to work harder than necessary and result in increased energy costs.

Frozen coils

When the evaporator coil is frozen, it means that air flow is blocked somewhere in your cooling system. It can be due to a dirty air filter, clogged return air ducts or poor fan performance. To fix it, turn off your air conditioner and shut off the furnace switch. Wait 24 hours to see if the evaporator coil has thawed. Then, change the air filter and restart your AC. If the evaporator coil still freezes, the coil may need to be replaced.

A faulty compressor

A faulty compressor can be hard to diagnose. It can fail in a sudden, catastrophic way, or it can develop slowly, losing starting power over time and stressing the condenser fan motor windings. A gradual capacitor failure usually presents itself as a loud, whining sound from the outdoor unit. To check the state of your capacitor, shut off power to the outdoor unit and remove its access panel. Using an insulated screwdriver, disconnect the terminals on the old capacitor and carefully remove it from its mounting bracket. Make sure to take a photo of the wires before you disconnect them, and then discharge the capacitor by touching it with an insulated screwdriver between its HERM and COM terminals (or “H” and “C”) to release the stored energy. Then, connect the new capacitor with its corresponding tabs and female crimp connectors.

Having a reliable air conditioner can greatly improve your home’s comfort and efficiency, so it’s important to keep up with routine maintenance. With regular inspections and routine service, you’ll be less likely to experience an unexpected breakdown on a hot summer day.
