I keep reading news about identity theft where large corporation with an army of system administrators and technical types are employed. Huge resources and plenty of security technologies available and yet they manage to loose 1000's of customers private credit records in lost and stolen laptops or by hackers who have much too easily cracked the locks to their "Secured" databases...
It makes me think of the average Joe who barely has enough technical skills to push the button to start his own Pc.... How vulnerable is he to data theft?
Wow...
The following is a simple protocol to protect users data but an effective one and the one I recommend to my clients... It seems to work.
Hide your serial numbers, passwords, phone numbers and everyday notes in a safe encrypted place. Use the tools I recommend below and your informations will be encrypted and password protected and doing so you will effectively deny hackers and those with prying eyes access to it.
Users create documents and leave them unlocked and unencrypted because its complex or takes too long to do. Here is a few easy simple ways to get around having lots of credit cards and account numbers as well as any other sensitive documents easily accessible while being quickly and effectively secured.
Keep in mind some of these tools are free but they still deliver a much better protection than your average simple password on a document.
Use encrypted real time notes like AM-Notebook Pro. It runs in your status bar and it gives you the ability to have single click access to all your notes (even small spreadsheets) and to "Lock" some or all in an encrypted envelope very easily. Get it here http://www.aignes.com/download/notesetup.exe
AMNotes is by far my most used software besides my web browser, and everyone I have recommended this software to has responded with great excitement and not only because of the secured notes (the free version doesn't lock or encrypt the notes by the way).
Another very useful tool for users who carry "portable" passwords and user account around. You can use this tiny portable encrypted document It's just a single note but it is very simple to use (It will only encrypt a text note) on the fly and it's Free! Steganos lockNote http://locknote.steganos.com/
If you need something a bit more substantial where you can create small encrypted portable containers you can use CryptainerLE (Free) it is relatively easy to use and it works fast. The containers are limited to 25 megs but you can have as many containers as you need. http://www.cypherix.com/cryptainerle/
And for those who need some more "Industrial" strength encrypted containers you can use Sentry 2020 (I use Sentry 2020 for XP X64)
It's an awesome product. A large selection of encryption protocols and it's tough enough to stand to any hackers. Also the containers can be huge and many and they can be backed up using encrypted backups as well. You can get it here http://www.softwinter.com/ They also have versions for PDA's and other portable gizmos.
As for the those who want to automate and delegate all the Web centric login password transactions to a software, you can use Roboform.... http://www.roboform.com/ The nice thing about this software is that it remembers "All" your passwords and for some who are exhibiting pre Alzheimer's symptoms "THAT" is what lets them sleep at night!
As a passing remark and perhaps stating the obvious... When you Encrypt something... If you forget the password, well... then forget the content as well because, well.. it's encrypted and that's it!
Aaah... what do I know, someone intelligent like you probably wont become a statistic and need to focus you attention to these simple details... _________________
