Most users I service in the field before speaking with me didn't bother defragmenting the hard disk more often than every couple of months. Some never actually did. Some even had the garbage bin overstuffed to several gigs of garbaged and they never even knew they had to empty it. Small wonder they have data corruption and premature Hard Drive failures.

The best protocol to fragmentation is to clean up the file system with a cleanup tool and to run a good De-fragmentation tool weekly. Never defragment your disk without cleanning up all the data junk first. You would simply end up re organizing a lot of garbage that should be removed first and it would also help free up some disk space.

Windows bundles a small (rather uselless) Disk cleanup tool but it doent do enough to keep the disk clear of cluther. However if you chose not to use external tools to cleanup at least use it to cleanup regularly.

as for a De-fragmentation tool there are a few free ones but I would only recommend Diskeeper from http://www.executive.com it is not a free tool but it is among the best in my opinion, it is safe and fast. or stick to the Free built in from Windows itself.

If you must "Stick" with the built in Defragmentation utility, perhaps you should consider using the "Free" SpeedDefrag 5.0.1 which optimizes Windows XP defrag. It restarts your computer, which refreshes the RAM and loads just the defrag.exe program. This imposes minimum load on the system and therefore defragmentation speed is increased. This small software will also shutdown or restart your computer automatically once defrag is over.
